General Description:HRL is seeking a self-motivated scientist /
engineer with excellent communication and leadership skills to
serve as the Department Manager of Computational Physics. In this
position, the candidate will be the primary line manager for the
department containing multiple groups in areas including quantum
theory and simulation, quantum optoelectronics, quantum software,
and device modeling. The role consists of roughly 30% management
and 70% technical contributions.Essential Duties:
- Management duties include managing resources (e.g. allocating
team personnel to projects), talent acquisition (e.g. recruiting),
performance management through informal and formal feedback, and
additional department-wide, lab-wide, and HRL-wide assignments
(e.g. strategic planning for capital investments).
- The department manager will work closely with the Vice
President for the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory and with
key technical leaders within the department on a wide range of
tactical and strategic development efforts.
- Technical contributions (through direct technical work and/or
technical project leadership) should be aligned with the skills and
capabilities of the department in one or more of the following
areas: quantum architecture, quantum
characterization/verification/validation methods, quantum control
software, semiconductor and superconductor device modeling, and
quantum optoelectronics.
- Technical and managerial duties require candidate to present
details of work to colleagues during design/code reviews, create
and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines, and
provide written and oral summaries of work performed as needed
(e.g. for reports).Required Skills:
- At least 5 years of experience in a role involving leadership
of highly trained technical staff.
- Demonstrated experience with successful resource allocation and
management. Experience with line management functions, such as
drafting of job descriptions, hiring staff, and providing critical
feedback to staff.
- More than 10 years of experience in one or more of the
technical areas outlined above, preferably in a research and
development environment.Required Education:MS or PhD in physics,
applied physics, computer science, or related scientific
field.Physical Requirements:Proficiency in use of computers,
programming technical simulation software, software development,
oral and written communication, interaction with vendors/colleagues
and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven
environment. Ability to work well in a team and
independently.Special Requirements:
- US Citizenship required.
- Must have or be willing to apply for and maintain a security
clearance.Compensation:The base salary range for this full-time
position is $177,400 - $221,800 + bonus + benefits. Our salary
ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range
displayed on each job posting reflects the target for new hire
salaries for the position. Individual pay is determined by work
location and additional factors, including job-related skills,
